Enrico based his thesis on the life of Joaquim Nabuco. In this video, he presents more intrinsic factors in the formation of Joaquim Nabuco's personality. Enrico even comments that he is used to talking about Nabuco's political and professional stance, but here he wanted to do something a little different, highlighting Joaquim's great personality! Nabuco studied at the Law School of Lago do São Francisco and finished in Olinda, Pernambuco. Enrico emphasizes that Joaquim, in his youth, had a bohemian lifestyle, always seeking beauty and the great sensations of the world. For several more years, he built his diplomatic career. When he realized that life was calling him, he left behind the bohemian, intellectual life and dreams he had lived, due to an awareness of human suffering as something greater. In 1978, when his father died, he decided to run for Congress. This is where his political life began. He even dedicated a decade, as a congressman, to being an abolitionist and parliamentary leader for abolition. The politician was a monarchist, and when the monarchy fell, he withdrew from the Republic. He spent the 1990s studying and writing his books. At the end of the decade, President Campos Sales invited him to be Brazil's lawyer in an arbitration against England regarding certain territorial boundaries. Nabuco died in 1910 after an intense career as a diplomat! Nabuco's earliest memories of slavery were sweet ones because his godmother—who raised him for a long time—treated the slaves very well. It wasn't a sad or bitter memory. The memories Joaquim recounts of his childhood are very special precisely because of his godmother's presence and her upbringing, because of the experience of love he made through her; this love that offered him hope for life. Enrico quotes a passage in which, in some way, Nabuco speaks about his vocation. He states that it is through the decision to act that vocation arises, and not the other way around.
