Mount Kurama has been revered since ancient times as a sacred site for Bishamonten, the northern protector of the capital, and is also considered a sacred site for Gohomaoson, known for his tengu appearance. Sōjō-ga-tani, located in the mountains, is known as the place where the young Ushiwakamaru received military tactics from a tengu, as depicted in the Noh play "Kurama Tengu." However, Mount Kurama's great tengu, Sojō-bō, is said to be the reincarnation of Ien Sojō, a disciple of Kōbō Daishi, who is also associated with Sojō-ga-mine Peak on Mount Inari, a site of other Shugendo training. Later, after meeting an untimely death in Oshu, Yoshitsune's soul is said to have returned to this temple, where he is still enshrined as Shanao-son in Sojo-ga-tani.
