Port Aransas is a city on Mustang Island, on the Texas coast. It's known for its Gulf of Mexico beaches and fish-filled waterways. Roberts Point Park offers an observation tower for bay views and dolphin sightings. At Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, a boardwalk crosses alligator-inhabited wetlands that are also home to birds like roseate spoonbills. Boats run from Fisherman's Wharf to secluded San José Island. Padre Island is a barrier island along the southern coast of Texas. It's home to Padre Island National Seashore, a vast protected area with beaches sheltering rare Kemp's ridley sea turtles. Grasslands Nature Trail winds through the seashore's bird-rich, marshy terrain. To the north, Padre Balli Park offers surf breaks. Its Bob Hall Pier stretches into the Gulf of Mexico and serves as a recreational fishing hub. Mustang Island was named for the wild horses that roamed the island for hundreds of years. No one is sure how the mustangs got here. Spaniards might have brought them, or perhaps they swam from a shipwreck. In the 19th century, ranches began infringing on the mustangs' habitat. Mustang Island is a barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Texas in the United States. The island is 18 miles long, stretching from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas. The island is oriented generally northeast–southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, and Corpus Christi Bay on the north and west. Padre Island National Seashore is a national seashore located on Padre Island off the coast of South Texas. In contrast to South Padre Island, known for its beaches and vacationing college students, PINS is located on North Padre Island and consists of a long beach where nature is preserved. Corpus Christi is a Texas city on the Gulf of Mexico. It’s tucked into a bay and its beaches are sheltered by Padre and Mustang islands. The Padre Island National Seashore is home to migratory birds and endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. The harborfront Texas State Aquarium has touch pools, an aquatic nursery and a shark exhibit. Nearby, a WWII aircraft carrier, USS Lexington, now houses a naval aviation museum.
