This small village became a stopover for travelers going to or coming from the Cibao Central region. According to the 2010 census, the municipality of Santo Domingo Oeste had 272,776 inhabitants, of which 166,000 lived in the urban area and 40,557 in the rural area. The municipality has evolved in various areas; in terms of industry, it has free trade zones, a variety of workshops, food processing plants, supermarkets, churches, and shops. It also has various official and private service organizations: police, fire department, city hall, civil defense, public health (the Dr. Vinicio Calventi General Hospital and two public sub-centers) and private clinics, organized transportation, drinking water, telecommunications, roads, street lighting, public and private education, and a variety of nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and other establishments.
