The Final Journey of S.N. Goenka His Holiness Gurudev Shri S.N. Goenka passed away peacefully in Mumbai on September 29, 2013, at the age of 90. He remained conscious and completely calm until his final moments, true to his teachings of Vipassana, with no expression of pain on his face. He had even given prior indications of his departure. The Maharashtra government accorded him a final farewell with full state honors and a gun salute. His urn was placed for public viewing at the Global Vipassana Pagoda, where rain showered its natural welcome, and thousands of practitioners paid their respects. In accordance with his final wish, his remains were taken to his native Burma (Myanmar). The urn received a grand welcome in both Thailand and Myanmar. In Myanmar, nature greeted him with a mild earthquake. Finally, his ashes were immersed in the Irrawaddy River in Mandalay through a massive and unprecedented water procession, amidst thousands of floating lamps and fireworks. Although he is no longer physically present among us, his priceless legacy of Vipassana and pure Dharma will always guide us and do good to the world. Revered Gurudev Shri S.N. Goenka passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on September 29, 2013, at his home in Mumbai. He remained fully conscious and serene until his last breath, perfectly embodying the Vipassana teachings of the art of living and dying, with no signs of pain on his face. He even gave a subtle prior indication of his passing. He was given a farewell with full state honors, including a gun salute, by the Maharashtra government. His urn was kept at the Global Vipassana Pagoda, where rain seemingly welcomed him naturally, and thousands of meditators paid their final tributes.
