Daikaku-ji Temple Daikaku-ji Temple (official name: Former Saga Imperial Palace, Daikaku-ji Temple) is the head temple of the Shingon Daikaku-ji sect, located in Saga, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City, boasting a history of over 1200 years. Its predecessor was the "Saga-in Imperial Villa," built in the early Heian period as a detached palace for Emperor Saga, and it is known as a prestigious "monzeki temple" (a temple headed by a member of the imperial family). My visit coincided with a special year when the "Bojutsukai Fuhoe" ceremony, held once every 60 years, took place, and I was able to visit during that period. Main Gate (Entrance Gate) This is an architectural surviving structure from the early Edo period and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Style: It is a magnificent "yakui-mon" style gate reminiscent of a castle. Roof: It is a gabled roof with a heavy, tiled roof. History: It is said that this gate was originally built in the early Edo period as the gate of Chifukuin Temple, and was acquired by Daikakuji Temple and relocated to its current location. Shikidai Entrance (Formal Entrance Platform): According to temple tradition, it was relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace during the Edo period, and is currently used when special guests visit. The wall paintings inside the entrance feature Kano Eitoku's important cultural property, "Pine Tree and Mountain Bird." A masterpiece that catches the eye of visitors, vividly depicting a powerful pine tree and mountain birds against a gold leaf background. Located at the main entrance leading to the Shinden (Imperial Hall), it is one of the oldest stylistic wall paintings at Daikakuji Temple. You can admire the dazzling beauty of the gilded screen paintings up close. In front of the screen paintings is the palanquin used by Emperor Go-Uda, the 91st emperor, and the palanquin is adorned with Emperor Go-Uda's crest, the "Kuyogiku" (nine-star chrysanthemum). Kano Sanraku's "Pine and Hawk Screen Painting" is a gilded screen painting designated as an Important Cultural Property, conveying the magnificent spirit of the Momoyama period. Incidentally, Kano Eitoku and Kano Sanraku were master and disciple who led the Kano school, the largest school of painting in the history of Japanese painting, which flourished from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period. Eitoku laid the foundation for the magnificent Momoyama art that symbolized the power of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and his adopted son, Sanraku, laid the foundation for the Kyo-Kano school of painting in Kyoto. Murasame Corridor The corridor connecting the Shinden (main hall) and the Shingyo-zenden (temple before the Heart Sutra) is called the "Murasame Corridor" because the vertical pillars resemble rain and the right-angled bends of the corridor resemble lightning. The ceiling is built low to prevent theft of swords and spears when noble people pass through. The floor is made of nightingale flooring. Godai-do (Main Hall) Founded in the mid-Edo period (Tenmei era). The current main hall of Daikaku-ji Temple. It enshrines the Five Great Wisdom Kings, centered around Fudo Myoo. Located on the shore of Osawa Pond, the central front is a wooden panel door (itakarado), and the two bays on each side are shitomido (shitomido). On the east side facing Osawa Pond, there is a moon-viewing platform (nure-en) that extends out over the pond, offering a magnificent view of Osawa Pond, and there is also a common entrance to the Osawa Pond area. Special goshuin (temple stamps) and amulets are available at the reception area. Shinden (Imperial Palace) A Shinden-zukuri style building bestowed by Emperor Go-Mizunoo during the Edo period. It was used as a consort's residence by Tofukumonin Kazuko, daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second Tokugawa shogun, who married the emperor. The gable ornaments, fascinated boards, and ceilings are elaborately decorated. The front features the tachibana (mandarin orange tree) on the right and the ume (plum tree) on the left, remnants of the imperial palace. The cicada decorations on the shoji screens are exquisitely crafted. The fusuma paintings adorning the Peony Room and the Red Plum Room, "Peony Painting" and "Red Plum Painting," were painted by Kano Sanraku. Shingyo-zenden (or Miei-do) Constructed in 1925 (Taisho 14). This building was originally the Kyoenden (banquet hall) built for the enthronement of Emperor Taisho, and was later bestowed upon the temple and relocated. As it is the hall in front of the Shingyo-den, it is called "Shinkyo-zenden" (Shingyo Front Hall), and the front of the inner sanctuary is open to allow worship of the Shingyo-den. It is also called "Miei-do" (Image Hall) because it enshrines the statues of Emperor Saga, Kobo Daishi (Hiken Daishi), Emperor Go-Uda, and Prince Tsunesada, who are of particular importance in the history of Daikaku-ji Temple. Chokufu Shingyoden (Imperial Sutra Hall) Rebuilt in 1925 (Taisho 14), mode...
