Steep, light gray Jurassic limestone cliffs mark the dramatic ascent of the Alb into the beautiful Upper Swabian landscape. With over 2,800 caves, it is one of the most cave-rich regions in Europe. It is bordered by the Danube and Neckar rivers. Located almost in the center of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve, and therefore an ideal starting point for exploring the Swabian Alb, is the tranquil town of Zwiefalten on the Ach River with its Zwiefalten Minster. Formerly a Benedictine abbey, it is one of the best-preserved examples of late Baroque/Rococo architecture in southern Germany. Hike into the Lauter Valley to the Wimsener Cave, named after Elector Frederick of Württemberg. It is Germany's only navigable water cave, and continue on to Ehrenfels Castle. Pass the Hohenurach Castle ruins and the over 30-meter-high waterfall to the Shepherds' Run town of Bad Urach on the Erms River, with its historic market square and the late Gothic St. Amandus Collegiate Church. From afar, you can see the landmark of the former Free Imperial City of Reutlingen—also known as the gateway to the Swabian Alb—St. Mary's Church, dating from the 13th century. It is one of the most beautiful and important Gothic religious buildings in Württemberg, built after the unsuccessful siege of Reutlingen in 1247. The golden angel and the Holy Sepulchre are preserved to this day. The Karlshöhle and Bärenhöhle caves, both over 5 million years old, are show caves with stalactites and stalagmites. The Karlshöhle was discovered when a teacher collecting plants accidentally dropped his snuffbox into a crevice. It was named after Karl, the heir to the throne of Württemberg. Over 100 years later, in 1949, bats led the way to the Bärenhöhle, so named because cave bear skeletons were found there. The drive to the Danube takes less than 15 minutes. You'll reach Riedlingen, a small town with a picturesque, historic center. Continue along the Danube to the princely Romantic Park and Inzigkofen Monastery. Steep cliffs, such as the Amalie Rock, narrow the river's course. High above the Danube lies Sigmaringen Castle, the ancestral seat of the Princes of Hohenzollern. On the way to the Neckar River, you'll pass Hohenzollern Castle near Hechingen, the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern and thus of the Kings of Prussia and the last German Emperors. Tübingen, one of Germany's oldest university towns. City of poets and philosophers: Hölderlin, Schelling, and Schlegel. A must-see: a punt ride on the Neckar River and the picturesque old town with its 1,000-year history. To conclude this exciting journey, two highlights await: Directly above the Danube rises one of the most beautiful monastic complexes in southern Germany: the magnificent Baroque Obermarchtal Monastery with its Minster of St. Peter and Paul. A former Premonstratensian monastery, once an imperial abbey. Lichtenstein Castle stands proudly on a rocky spur at the foot of the Swabian Alb. Also famous for Hauff's novel Lichtenstein. #tübingen #reutlingen #swabianalb #donau #neckar #@HeFoKu
