Raising a Daughter with Cerebral Palsy Alone. A Mother's Untold Story

When we first met this family in August last year, the situation was critical. Maria is 21 years old and lives with Cerebral Palsy. She requires blended food to eat safely which means electricity isn't optional, it's life-sustaining. But the family had rent arrears, no consistent food, no diapers. Maria's mother had been unemployed since Covid. She was the only one holding everything together. We sat down with her this Mother's Day to hear her story in her own words, what those early days felt like, what kept her going, and where the family is today. Because today looks very different. Earlier this year, we invested $250 into a small business she started. Last month, she made a profit of $100, enough to cover a full month of food and diapers. She has cleared her electricity bill. She is working to clear her rent arrears. And she is doing all of this while grieving the loss of her father, who passed away the same month. This interview is raw, honest, and real. It is a window into what caregiving truly looks like. The sacrifice, the resilience, and the love that keeps a mother going when everything else falls apart.
