La scienza del contatto visivo: Perché il nostro cervello giudica male chi devia lo sguardo
When a neurodivergent person avoids eye contact, it's often to manage sensory overload or to better concentrate. However, the neurotypical brain reacts to this absence in a very specific and unconscious way. Why does this phenomenon happen? It's a sensory processing bug. In this video, we explore how the human brain processes multisensory information. Under normal conditions, visual data from eye contact acts as a redundant validation of auditory and social signals. When this visual confirmation is missing, the brain experiences a true cognitive short-circuit. Deprived of this complete set of data, a survival bias kicks in: by default, it identifies the interlocutor as "weird," unreliable, or incapable of communicating. Understanding this neurological misalignment is crucial to stop placing the burden of communication solely on the neurodivergent person and to recognize how our sensory expectations dictate our social biases.
