위로가 필요한 밤, 쇼팽의 녹턴 6곡과 고요한 그림들 | Chopin's Nocturnes | 18 Paintings by Thomas Dewing & Eugene Carriere

Chopin’s nocturnes are often associated with melancholy. Their tranquil phrasing and lyrical phrasing have led many to connect them with quiet sorrow or inner grief. And yet, their emotional spectrum is far more expansive than sorrow alone. This video invites you to listen beyond the sadness—to discover the solace, warmth, and gentle emotional restoration embedded within six selected nocturnes by Chopin. Rather than remaining in the sentiment of sorrow, we explore how music can lead us through it, toward emotional clarity and quiet healing. To expand this emotional journey visually, the video pairs each nocturne with a curated selection of symbolic and meditative artworks from the late 19th century. A total of 18 paintings—carefully selected for their expressive stillness—guide the viewer through each phase of reflection and renewal. Featured Artists and Paintings The video combines the works of two painters: Thomas Wilmer Dewing, an American tonal impressionist, and Eugène Carrière, a French symbolist. Though from different cultural spheres, both artists shared a unique visual language centered on silence, interiority, and the delicate tension between presence and absence. Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851–1938) Dewing’s work is often described as silent, contemplative, and restrained. His figures—usually women—are absorbed in moments of reading, music, or quiet solitude, rarely acknowledging one another or the viewer. His backgrounds dissolve into soft tonal fields, creating not physical space but emotional atmosphere. In this video, 14 of his paintings are featured, including A Reading, The Song, The Letter, The White Dress, and The Hermit Thrush. In particular, The Hermit Thrush does not depict the bird itself, but symbolically evokes it. Often called “the most lyrical of American birds,” the hermit thrush here represents the idea of unheard music, mirroring the inner silence in Chopin’s later nocturnes. Paintings such as The Song, The Lute, and Piano engage directly with musical motifs, making them ideal visual companions for the soft rhythm and introspective phrasing of Chopin’s piano works. Eugène Carrière (1849–1906) Carrière’s paintings dissolve the edges of form, rendering people and scenes in muted browns and greys, as though suspended in dreams. His brushwork is soft, blurred, and intimate—evoking the depth of feeling more than the clarity of realism. The video includes four of his major works: Her Mother’s Kiss, Sleep, Les jeunes mères, and The Contemplator. Her Mother’s Kiss, placed at the start of the video, captures a tender, silent moment of maternal love—an emotional point of entry that immediately shifts the tone from sorrow to gentleness. The Contemplator, as the title suggests, features a solitary figure lost in thought. The painting’s quiet gravity pairs seamlessly with the later nocturnes, where emotion deepens and resolves into calm reflection. Emotion-Curated Nocturnes: A Journey in Six Pieces The six nocturnes selected are not simply Chopin’s most famous, nor are they chosen for performance popularity. They are curated for emotional contour—each one guiding the listener gently through a different phase of feeling. Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 – A lyrical beginning with warmth and grace Nocturne Op. 15 No. 2 – Elegant clarity and poised stillness Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2 – Rich harmonic texture and emotional balance Nocturne Op. 37 No. 2 – Like soft sunlight through memory Nocturne Op. 55 No. 2 – Deep introspection and contemplative depth Nocturne Op. 62 No. 1 – Resolution, healing, and emotional afterglow Each piece is accompanied by three paintings that parallel the music’s tone and emotional progression. A Different Kind of Listening Music can express sorrow. But the aim of music—especially that of Chopin—is not only to dwell within that sorrow, but to gently carry us through it. The nocturnes do not dramatize emotion; they refine it, distill it, and offer us a space to breathe. This video offers a visual and emotional path from sorrow to solace, from stillness to renewal. The bilingual subtitles are not just informative—they are interpretive companions, guiding the listener through musical shifts and visual moods. Whether you watch in silence, with intention, or in quiet reflection, we hope this experience brings you not only a deeper appreciation of Chopin’s music, but a gentle sense of inner peace.
