In late October 2025, a southern elephant seal named Alma came ashore and gave birth to a pup, whom rescuers named Francisca. The birth was exceptional, as these animals usually inhabit colder regions and it is uncommon for them to reproduce so far north. For almost a month, mother and daughter remained together on the shore. Technicians from the Maldonado Municipality and volunteers from SOS Fauna Marina installed a fence to protect the area and prevent the public from getting too close. Alma exclusively nursed her pup for about 25 days, the typical lactation period for this species. On November 6, Alma began her return to the sea, leaving Francisca on the beach. Her departure was calm and natural, as explained by specialists. In elephant seals, the mother leaves her pup once it has completed its initial feeding and can begin its independent life. Since then, Francisca has remained on the shore under the observation of technicians and volunteers. The goal is to ensure her well-being until she is strong enough to fully submerge and continue her journey in the ocean. The story of Alma and Francisca not only forged a strong emotional bond with the residents and visitors of Piriápolis, but also served to raise awareness about the importance of respecting the space of marine species. Authorities remind the public that they should not attempt to approach, touch, or feed them, as this can alter their natural behavior. Today, Alma is already back out to sea, and Francisca remains on the beach, growing stronger every day. Their story is a testament to the power of nature and the community's commitment to protecting marine wildlife.
