How to Walk Hip Action Focus with Todd Martin MD

A closer look at the gluteus medius, gluteus maximus, and hip flexors and how they contribute to a normal, low impact gait. There is much misunderstanding about how we use our hip muscles when we walk. It is commonly thought that we need to push off with the glutes to move forward. This is wrong and a cause of much of the heavy heel strike problem that many people suffer with. This incorrect heel strike has caused many people to try reimagining walking such that forefoot or midfoot placement is normal. The truth is that initial heel contact is the proper way to walk, but it must be done correctly. That requires correct use of the hip muscles as well as the upper and lower abdominal muscles.
