Download Saily app or go to https://saily.com/tula The Mosquito coast of Nicaragua and Honduras is known among sailors for incidents of piracy and theft. Due to its remote location, limited law enforcement presence, and proximity to drug trafficking routes, this area has seen reports of boardings and opportunistic theft on anchored and sailing vessels. While not widespread or highly organized, these incidents have led many cruisers like us to take extra precautions or avoid the area altogether when planning their routes through Central America. The route from Panama to the Bay islands of Honduras goes right through this area and it's not really possible to avoid the area altogether. The best thing we can do is try to stay offshore far enough where its way more difficult for the these pirates to get all the way out to us in their smaller vessels.. So here we go... 700 miles on the big blue trying to avoid any trouble.
