356: Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve – Where to See California Poppies Blooming Right Now

Every spring, Southern California adventurers head to the hills of the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve, which is known to erupt into shades of orange as thousands of California poppies bloom across the Mojave Desert landscape. Located just outside Lancaster, CA, this protected reserve is one of the most reliable places in the state to see wildflower displays and California poppies in their natural habitat. While this year isn’t shaping up to be a historic California superbloom, the poppies are currently near peak bloom across the Antelope Valley region, and the scenery is still absolutely worth the trip. During my recent visit, the reserve itself had solid pockets of poppies along the rolling hills and trails, but the real surprise was just outside the park boundaries. Massive carpets of vibrant orange California poppies stretch across nearby hillsides and open fields, creating sweeping landscapes that look like they’ve been painted with a brush.
