The carbon atom can belong to an inorganic compound, such as carbon monoxide (CO), which forms "metal carbonyls," considered organometallic compounds. More often, the carbon atom bonded to the metal belongs to a hydrocarbon group, such as ethyl, propyl, and butyl groups. Organometallic compounds also include metallocenes (such as ferrocenes) with the formula (C5R5)2M. These are used, for example, in certain syntheses (CVD methods) of carbon nanotubes.
