On the night of November 11, 1989, the city of San Salvador was plunged into total darkness. Columns of the FMLN penetrated the Zacamil neighborhood and transformed its concrete buildings into vertical fortresses. The army responded by bombing its own capital from the air. Hundreds of homes were destroyed. Thousands of families were trapped. This was the most urban and most brutal battle of the Salvadoran civil war.
