They're based on the very old concept of the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of different elements against each other. Fire beats Grass, Grass beats Water, and Water beats Fire. This division into types is essentially the foundation of the Pokémon battle system. Thanks to this approach, it's impossible to single out clearly strong and clearly weak pocket monsters, as much in a battle depends not only on your type but also on your opponent's type. There are currently 18 known Pokémon types, and some species have not one, but two types. For example, Kakuna is both a Bug and Poison type, while Dugong is both a Water and Ice type. A Pokémon's type can almost always be determined fairly accurately by its appearance, but sometimes it's not so obvious. Today, we'll be discussing those cases where, just by looking at a Pokémon, you don't always understand why it's a specific type and not another.
