The city lies on the axis of both highways and is 315 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte. History of the city: Guido Marlière, a French soldier and peacemaker, arrived in Brazil to minimize conflicts between Portuguese explorers, who sacrificed indigenous people who refused to be enslaved. His ideals and attitudes led to his arrest as a French spy in the service of Napoleon, intent on dominating Europe, and thus an enemy of Portugal. In February 1812, Prince Regent Dom João VI released him to continue his peacemaking mission. In 1819, Guido Marlière arrived in the region that is now the municipality of Muriaé and found the camp of Constantino José Pinto, a merchant of medicinal products and plants, with forty other men camped on the banks of the Muriaé River near a Puris village where Marlière built the Rosary Chapel, gaining the trust of both whites and natives, promoting peaceful coexistence and the necessary activities of both groups. The region, once considered pestilent, with numerous insects and a high incidence of yellow fever, was also rich in "Poaia," the popular name for the roots of a medicinal plant called Ipecacuanha, and hardwoods that attracted many families to settle in the village that formed around the chapel, named São Paulo do Manoel Burgo. The village developed as a major coffee producer, occupying the areas where timber was extracted from the region's forests. In 1841, it was elevated to the district of São João Batista do Presídio, now the city of Visconde do Rio Branco, under the name of São Paulo de Muriahé, from which it separated on May 16, 1855, to become a municipality. The construction of the Leopoldina Railroad station in 1866, connecting São Paulo do Muriahé to Rio de Janeiro, gave new impetus to the municipality's development, which in 1923 changed its name to Muriaé. Population, area, altitude, river, and borders: Today, June 2025, the municipality of Muriaé has a population of approximately 108,763 inhabitants, with a territorial domain of 841.693 km², at an altitude of 209 m.
