Vector-Borne Diseases Seminar (Health Education - Microbiology and Parasitology/MicroPara),🌟✨

Vector-borne diseases are human illnesses caused by parasites, viruses, and bacteria transmitted through blood-feeding arthropods like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. They account for over 17% of all infectious diseases globally, with prevalent examples including dengue, malaria, Zika, and Lyme disease. [1, 2, 3] Common Vector-Borne Diseases Dengue: Transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. Causes high fever, headaches, and body aches. Prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. [1, 2] Malaria: Caused by Plasmodium parasites and spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. Primarily endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, causing severe flu-like symptoms and potentially fatal complications. [1, 2] Lyme Disease: A bacterial infection transmitted by ticks. Characterized by a "bull's-eye" rash, fatigue, and joint pain. Found heavily in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. [1, 2] Zika: Spread by Aedes mosquitoes. While often mild in adults, it can cause severe birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. [1, 2, 3] Chikungunya: Transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, leading to high fever and prolonged, debilitating joint pain. [1] Common Vectors Mosquitoes: Responsible for transmitting dengue, malaria, Zika, chikungunya, and West Nile virus. Ticks: Responsible for transmitting Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. Fleas: Known vectors for plague. Sandflies: Transmit leishmaniasis. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] Prevention Strategies Because specific treatments or vaccines are not available for all of these diseases, primary prevention relies on vector control: [1, 2] Use Repellents: Apply EPA-registered insect repellents (such as those containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus) to exposed skin. [1, 2, 3] Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, particularly during peak vector activity hours (e.g., dawn and dusk for mosquitoes). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] Environmental Control: Eliminate standing water sources where mosquitoes breed, such as empty buckets, flower pots, and old tires. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] Physical Barriers: Install window and door screens, and use mosquito nets treated with insecticide when sleeping in endemic areas. [1, 2, 3] #insect #Seminar
