F. Skinner, was an American behaviorist psychologist, inventor, and philosopher. He was a professor at Harvard University from 1958 until his retirement in 1974. Skinner considered free will an illusion and human action dependent on the consequences of previous actions. If the consequences were bad, there was a high chance the action would not be repeated; if the consequences were good, the probability of the action being repeated became stronger. Skinner called this the principle of reinforcement. To strengthen behavior, Skinner used operant conditioning and considered response rate to be the most effective measure of response strength. To study operant conditioning, he invented the operant conditioning chamber, also known as the Skinner Box, and to measure rate, he invented the cumulative recorder. Using these tools, he and C. B. Ferster produced their most influential experimental work, which appeared in their book Schedules of Reinforcement (1957). Skinner developed behavior analysis, the philosophy of this science he called radical behaviorism,[7] and founded a school of experimental research in psychology—experimental behavior analysis. He envisioned the application of his ideas to the design of a human community in his utopian novel, Walden II, and his applied behavior analysis culminated in his work, Verbal Behavior. Skinner was a prolific author, publishing 21 books and 180 articles. Contemporary academia considers Skinner a pioneer of modern behaviorism, along with John B. Watson and Ivan Pavlov. A June 2002 survey listed Skinner as the most influential psychologist of the 20th century. SKINNER'S EXPERIMENTS ON BEHAVIORISM: Is it possible for a pigeon to be superstitious? Human superstition is a complex phenomenon, and its developmental history in human lives is still not understood. Despite its complexity, scientists have investigated the phenomena, or aspects of them, using animal models. Skinner studied the effect of releasing food at fixed and variable time intervals on pigeons. Regardless of what the pigeons did in a box, food was released, and the pigeon could then consume it. He observed that the pigeons, for a time, began to behave as if the food were associated with what they were doing. One of the pigeons began to move its head from side to side, while another circled the cage, and so on. Skinner called this pattern superstitious behavior. His work was pioneering in this area and impacted a whole generation of research on superstition in experimental psychology. He also participated in military experiments using pigeons trained to direct missiles during World War II. He created what we now call the "Skinner box," an operant conditioning chamber that conceptualized an animal's actions to obtain food or water. One example of how this box was used is the rat; Skinner placed a food dispenser, an electric grid on the floor, and a response lever in the box. The rat was placed in this environment. Over time, searching for ways to escape due to hunger, the animal realized that whenever the lever was pressed, food appeared in the box (through the dispenser). Thus, every time the rat was hungry, it pressed the lever. Operant Conditioning Differences between Reinforcement and Punishment
