Construction began in 1879 (the fifth year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign) and was completed in 1881 (the fifteenth year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign). It was built by the Kuang family from Taishan, Guangdong. It is the only relatively well-preserved late Qing Dynasty residential complex discovered in Guangzhou city. The 19 remaining houses are all two-story brick and wood buildings, typically in the typical Cantonese three-room, two-corridor style. Extending further into the interior, they form what is known locally as the "three-up, three-down" style, exhibiting a strong Lingnan architectural style. A horizontal plaque above the main gate of the wall reads "Julong" (Gathering Dragon).
