how to fix a dead rechargeable battery ( ni-mh | ni-cd )

I happened to fix my 18V craftsman drill battery by hooking up to a car jump starter. The battery would not hold a charge anymore and that was the fix and it only took a few seconds. I decided to try the same technique to revive some older AA and AAA rechargeable batteries that would no longer hold a charge. After plugging the batteries into my charger nothing would happen. The charger would not even recognize that a battery was plugged in, but after using the jump starter, I was able to recharge the batteries once again.
