Spatenstich für Rheindeich bringt 60 Hektar Überflutungsraum

Excavators are rolling in, construction workers are grabbing their shovels: Construction of the new Rhine dike begins today in Duisburg-Mündelheim. The city aims to better control the Rhine and protect its residents from flooding. The new dike will extend 500 meters inland, creating an additional 60 hectares of floodplain – the equivalent of more than 80 football fields. The construction project will cost 125 million euros and is scheduled for completion by 2029. Oliver Krischer of the Green Party says: "Every additional centimeter of floodplain counts when it comes to flood protection." The project is intended to benefit not only Duisburg, but also other Rhine regions and the Netherlands. With the groundbreaking ceremony, construction is now underway: The construction phase will last several years.
