Stained Glass (1940-1949)
British Instructional Films presentation. C/U of a circular stained glass window. Another window in C/U. A man makes the design for a window. A cartoon is made. Man paints in the "lead lines". A light box underneath illuminates the drawing and a tracing is made. Coloured glass is cut. C/U of the cutting tool in action. The glass is snapped. The tray of glass is taken to a man who paints on the details. The whole design is mounted on an easel with a light behind it. The glass is then stippled and the highlights are taken out. The glass is then fired after being laid out on a tray of Plaster of Paris. We see the tray being put into different kilns. The pieces of glass are laid on top of the cartoon and the lead is bent around them with the help of nails to hold them into position. A tallow candle is applied to the joins. C/U of the joints being soldered. Putty is applied to waterproof the joins. A window is put into place in a church. Tilt to show full splendour of the window. Voiceover encourages children to "look again" at the stained glass windows next time they go to church in their town or village. Note: this film was used in its entirety in the television broadcast "Men of Action". In this broadcast, the craftsmen we see at work were named and came into the television studio to demonstrate their craft to some school children. See record for "Men of Action" for more information. The print of this film does not have soundtrack - use neg and separate track. FILM ID:3476.04 FOR LICENSING ENQUIRIES VISIT http://www.britishpathe.com/
