[Anchor] A court ruling has been issued stating that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won must pay nearly 1 trillion won in cash as a property division settlement to Noh So-young, Director of Art Center Nabi. This is the largest amount ever recorded for a divorce property division in Korea. We connect now to our reporter at the court. Reporter Bae Kyu-bin. [Reporter] Yes, I am at the Seoul High Court. In this remand trial, dubbed the "property division of the century," the court ruled that Chairman Chey must pay Director Noh 944 billion won. This ruling comes nine years after Chairman Chey filed for divorce mediation in 2017, and the court ordered the payment in cash to defend his management rights. While this amount is significantly lower than the 1.38 trillion won settlement from the appellate trial, it far exceeds the 66.5 billion won from the first trial. Neither Director Noh nor Chairman Chey appeared in court today. Immediately after the sentencing, Ms. Noh’s side left the court without saying a word, while Chairman Choi’s side issued a brief statement. Let’s listen to it directly. [Reporter] Yes, first of all, the biggest points of contention were whether SK shares were subject to division and how much of Ms. Noh’s contribution to this should be recognized. The court acknowledged that SK shares are included in the division. The court determined that Ms. Noh had sufficiently contributed to the enhancement of SK Group’s value through household duties and child-rearing. The property division ratio was set at one-third for Ms. Noh and two-thirds for Chairman Choi. However, given that the Supreme Court deemed former President Roh Tae-woo's 30 billion won slush fund as illegal funds, this amount was not recognized as a contribution from Ms. Roh's side. In addition, shares gifted by Chairman Choi to relatives prior to the breakdown of the marriage for purposes such as maintaining management control were excluded from the division. Since the property division is being paid entirely in cash, Chairman Choi's shareholding is still recognized. [Anchor] With SK stocks rising sharply recently, the timing of the stock price calculation was a key issue. What judgment did the court make? [Reporter] Yes, the timing of the property division was also a matter of great interest. In conclusion, the court set the standard based on April 2024, the date of the closing arguments in the appellate trial prior to the remand, and the unit price was determined at 160,000 won, which was the stock price at that time. The equity value is approximately 2.076 trillion won. The court explained that the determination of the assets subject to division and their value follows a Supreme Court precedent stating that the date of the conclusion of the trial in the factual hearing of a divorce lawsuit must be used as the basis. Furthermore, the court determined that while SK's stock price rose significantly after the conclusion of the trial in the appellate court, Chairman Choi's managerial contribution played a major role in this rise. However, the court stated that the fact that the stock price rose sharply after the appellate trial was taken into account as a factor when determining the "property division ratio." If either party appeals the ruling after today's sentencing, the case will be sent back to the Supreme Court; however, if neither party files a further appeal, the nine-year legal dispute will come to an end.
