Sewing Lizzie Bennet’s Regency Gown | another dress from Pride & Prejudice

Hello everyone and welcome to a new video! It wouldn't be a year of sewing without another dress worn by Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice! As I mention in the beginning of the video, I don't intend to defend the film's costume decisions, only that they work for me and my aesthetic inclinations - and that armed with some period knowledge, we can make something very clearly inspired in a costume from the film with a little more historical accuracy! I've always been fascinated by the 1790s transitional fashion of the 18th century - there's not as much information or media that portrays it, but I love the idea of imagining Jane Austen, sat down in 1796-1797, writing Pride and Prejudice (at the time, called First Impressions) and pictured Lizzie Bennet in 1790s fashions. I used a pattern from Regency Women's Dress: Techniques and Patterns 1800–1830 by Cassidy Percoco (https://amzn.to/4307cSa), scaling it up to my size and doing a couple mock-ups to adjust the fit. This pattern was taken from an extant Quaker dress in an American collection. I picked it as it had very similar design features to the one in the film, mainly the gathered front. I used approximately 3 meters of lightweight, self-dyed linen fabric, and 0.5 m of heavier linen to interline the main aspects of the bodice. Underneath, I wear an 18th century shift, Regency short stays, and a Regency petticoat (videos for which are available here on the channel!). Stay tuned for some more Bennet adventures soon!
