Or is it just the end of the hype surrounding the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, MSI Claw, Lenovo Legion Go, and other PC handhelds? In this video, I discuss why the handheld market feels significantly quieter than it did a year or two ago. The Steam Deck redefined PC gaming on the go and triggered a whole wave of Windows handhelds. ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, and many other manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon – but currently, the market seems less euphoric. Many new devices are becoming more expensive, genuine technological leaps have become more difficult, and Windows on handhelds still isn't as user-friendly as a true console experience. At the same time, the Nintendo Switch 2 shows that mobile gaming is far from dead. On the contrary: The Switch 2 proves that many gamers still have a strong appetite for handheld gaming – provided the price, controls, games, and ease of use are right. Turn it on, start the game, have fun: That's precisely Nintendo's big advantage over many PC handhelds. But does that mean that Steam Deck, SteamOS, and PC handhelds have no future? Certainly not. Perhaps only the initial hype phase is over. Now the more exciting phase begins: PC handhelds need to mature, SteamOS needs to gain wider acceptance, Windows handhelds need to become simpler, and eventually, a Steam Deck 2 will also provide a new boost.
