If the wall is broken down, the city is not only threatened militarily; it is brought to shame spiritually. In Nehemiah 3, we see a community rebuilding. But from verse 15 to the end of the chapter, the action takes on a particularly profound meaning: the spring, the pool, David's steps, the house of David, the arsenal, the priests' house, the east gate, the gate of inspection, and finally, the return to the sheep gate.
