While recording the follow-up to their debut album, LIVIN’ LIKE HUSTLERS, Above the Law got caught up in the tussle involving their mentor Dr. Dre, who wanted to exit Ruthless Records. VOCALLY PIMPIN’, a stopgap and promotional EP, appeared in 1991 instead of Above the Law’s intended second album, BLACK MAFIA LIFE. The nine-cut record offered a glimpse of a music style that would reign over the West Coast and stretch its influence across the rap genre in the ‘90s. Meanwhile, the plan was to wait for the contractual entanglement they had with Dre to be sorted out, and then continue with their album-making career as normal.
