MARINE ARCHEOLOGY PODCAST- Ep.25; Unearthing the Secrets of the Jewel of Muscat

The discovery of the Belitung shipwreck in 1998 off the coast of Indonesia provides the earliest and most comprehensive evidence of direct maritime trade between the Arabian Peninsula and China. Dating to approximately 826 CE, the vessel was an Arab-style merchant ship laden with over 60,000 artifacts from the Tang Dynasty, destined for the Abbasid Empire. This find revolutionized historical understanding of the "Maritime Silk Route," proving that sea-based trade was highly developed six centuries earlier than previously believed.To honor this heritage, the Sultanate of Oman commissioned the Jewel of Muscat project—a faithful, full-scale reconstruction of the Belitung vessel. Built using traditional ninth-century techniques, including "sewn-plank" construction without nails, the ship successfully completed a 138-day voyage from Muscat to Singapore in 2010. Today, the original cargo is housed in Singapore’s Asian Civilisations Museum, while the Jewel of Muscat serves as a centerpiece at the Singapore Oceanarium, symbolizing a lasting legacy of bilateral cooperation and maritime history.
