Humphrey Ocean 'In Conversation' with Calvin Winner at Gainsborough's House

We were delighted to welcome Humphrey Ocean back to the Landscape Studio on February 7, 2025, for an insightful 'In Conversation' with Executive Director, Calvin Winner. Humphrey Ocean (b. 1951) lives and works in south London. His exhibition brings together paintings and drawings by Ocean spanning four decades, inspired by familiar but unassuming motifs that help define modern places. He has long been concerned with the detail of design within his own lifetime: the horizontal window, road signs, cars, concrete, a bungalow, 'all the human and haphazard incident that has happened and we have allowed to happen'. Ocean was born in Sussex and went to art schools in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton, and Canterbury. In the 1970s and 80s, he played bass for Ian Dury’s band, Kilburn and the High Roads, created album artwork for Paul McCartney and Wings, and painted celebrated portraits of McCartney and Philip Larkin. In the late 1990s, Ocean started to combine bold colours and simple forms to capture everyday design, modern buildings, and people, a distinctive way of working that he continues with today. In 2004, he was elected a Royal Academician and for almost a decade served as Professor of Perspective. The event features a Director's Cut of 'The Bits In Between' – a Household Pictures production featuring Humphrey Ocean.
