The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is often talked about as a "dangerous place" in the world. However, what I first saw in Ürümqi after walking for three weeks was a reality completely different from what I had imagined. Around the world, various serious issues about the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region are still being discussed. Massive detentions, forced labor, a surveillance society, restrictions on culture and religion――. However, the scenery I saw in Urumqi, the city where I first walked for a long time during my actual three-week trip to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, was very different from what I had imagined. The original purpose of this trip is to see the border between China and Kazakhstan. Along the way, I visited Urumqi, Turpan, Tacheng, Gulja, and Yining City, spending three weeks walking through Xinjiang. Among them, I was subjected to police questioning five times, and was effectively detained for a total of 38 hours.
