EP 09 Lhasa Road to Everest Base Camp Shigatse Yamdrok Lake Karola Glacier - Tibet Journey

Welcome to Episode 09 of my Tibet travel series! This leg kicks off in Lhasa at 8:30 AM, as we embark on a thrilling road trip toward Everest Base Camp, with Shigatse as our night stop. Our first pause comes at 8:50 AM along the Yarlung Tsangpo River—Tibet’s mighty Brahmaputra. Born at Angsi Glacier near Mount Kailash, its broad, silver waters flow at 3,650 meters, carving through sandy banks with Himalayan peaks faintly tracing the horizon—a stunning lifeline we’re tracing westward. By 9:30 AM, we pull over at a breathtaking photo spot—GPS coordinates 29.226496, 90.626496—labeled "Wave Mountain" in Chinese. Perched at 4,300 meters, this viewing platform overlooks a sweeping valley hugging the Tsangpo’s green thread. White yaks adorned with bells and burly Tibetan Mastiffs pose proudly, their thick fur ruffling in the wind. The valley below rolls out like a painting, a perfect shot of Tibet’s pastoral soul on this Himalayan haul. At 10:10 AM, we reach Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, sitting at 4,441 meters. Its 638 square kilometers of turquoise water shimmer under the sun, fed by glacier melt from the Nyainqentanglha range. Driving along its 250-kilometer banks, we catch spectacular reflections—snow-capped peaks and sky mirrored in its calm, mineral-rich surface. Locals revere it—no fishing’s allowed, spirits guard its depths—while pilgrims trek its seven-day kora and cranes speckle the shores. Lunch at 11:30 AM is special—we’re welcomed into a Tibetan family’s stone-walled home near the lake’s western edge. Served village-style dishes, we taste hearty flavors—think tsampa and yak butter tea—while watching them brew barley whiskey in clay pots, a sharp, golden sip of tradition. Yak cheese, tangy and rich, delights us, offering a fun, hands-on peek into rural life at 4,400 meters. This cozy hour gazing into their daily world fuels us for the road ahead. Post-lunch by 12:30 PM, the S307 climbs from Yamdrok’s banks into rugged mountains. Vast valleys unfold, dotted with snow-capped giants like Noijin Kangsang, their presence bold. At 1:30 PM, we hit Karola Glacier at 5,560 meters—a roadside wonder spilling 700 meters wide from its 7,191-meter peak. Its icy face glints under the sun, meltwater trickling down, a stark contrast to Yamdrok’s calm. Prayer flags flutter nearby, a nod to its sacred status despite shrinking edges. By 2:40 PM, we stop at Manla Reservoir Sightseeing Zone, at 4,300 meters. Walking the ridge overlooking this man-made lake is thrilling—its vivid blue waters stretch below, framed by jagged peaks. Hours could pass gazing at this hydropower marvel, a peaceful shift from Karola’s chill, blending human craft with Tibet’s wild beauty on this high plateau. Driving through Gyantse Town from 3:00 to 3:30 PM, we pass golden barley fields swaying in the breeze, roads lined with poplar trees, and ancient ruins—crumbling forts from its 14th-century trade days. At 4,050 meters, it’s a quiet stretch, the valley’s green patches fading into distant peaks. Finally, at 5:30 PM, we roll into Shigatse—our night stop at 3,840 meters, Tibet’s second city buzzing with life. Our hotel rooms here blend comfort with Tibetan style—wooden beams, colorful rugs, and prayer flags make it cozy, more than enough for rest after a 9-hour trek from Lhasa. Stepping out post-check-in, we grab fruit and snacks—apples, nuts, dried yak meat—for tomorrow’s sparse road to Everest Base Camp, 350 km away. Shigatse’s a gateway, and with Everest’s pull growing, we say goodnight under a starry Himalayan sky.
