His hopes of obtaining a position as musical director had been disappointed in Dresden and Leipzig prior to succeeding his friend, Ferdinand Hiller, in Düsseldorf at the beginning of the 1850/51 season. The change of scene and the entirely different mentality of the Rhineland had an inspiring effect on Schumann; a work particularly connected with the composer's new environment is the Third Symphony in E-flat major, wich bears the sobriquet the Rhenish. According to him it contains "generally more relaxed moods than that in C major" (by which he meant the Second Symphony). It is Schumann's last work in this genre and forms part of his late work which is still very controversial — or rather misunderstood. Fortunately this symphony is so full of optimism that his biographers have been unable to attribute to it any audible signs of Schumann's approaching mental illness. The composer's remarks on the motivation for composing the Rhenish plunged the work into a debate which was raging in the middle of the 19th century about absolute and programme music. According to Schumann, events in his new surroundings, the sight of the Rhine and of Cologne Cathedral were his sources of musical inspiration. The Feierlich (solemn) movement between the andante and the finale should be seen as a grand introduction to the last movement. Schumann had originally given it the indication "In the style of an accompaniment to a solemn ceremony", because this introduction was inspired by a ceremony in the cathedral of Cologne. He later removed the indication. No doubt these remarks led the anonymous reporter on the first performance on February 6, 1851 at Düsseldorf to ascribe to the symphony a pictorial description of Rhenish life. Writing of the second movement, the Scherzo, for example, he spoke of "placid Rhineland life", "hills green with grapes" and "cheerful grape harvests"; in the fourth movement the critic imagined himself in Cologne Cathedral, and in the end he wrote: "Lively finale (…) with a fresh, broadly drawn-out introductory theme into which the spirits of earlier movements are interwoven. Everyone is hurrying out into the open air to enjoy a cheerful evening of reminiscences." For all the naive simplification inherent in this interpretation, it does take note, in the last passage, of an important characteristic of Schumann's symphonic writing: the interconnection of the movements. Since the themes, motifs and episodes are linked together across the movements, there really does exist, on a subtle level, a "reminiscence" and thus a special quality of cohesion. Schumann made use of this special form of association in all his symphonies — a technique which Brahms adopted and further developed in his symphonic writing. 🔥 Album available // Schumann: The 4 Symphonies by George Szell 🔥 Choose my streaming platform: https://lnk.to/schumansymphoniesszell Other Album available // Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream by George Szell 🎧 Qobuz (Hi-Res) https://cutt.ly/0eKzFJdc Tidal (Hi-Res) https://cutt.ly/6eKzGEA3 🎧 Apple Music (Lossless) https://cutt.ly/TeKzGAxm Deezer (Hi-Fi) https://cutt.ly/GeKzGZ7w 🎧 Amazon Music (Hi-Res) https://cutt.ly/feKzGN6L Spotify (mp3) https://cutt.ly/keKzG3Bx 🎧 Idagio (Hi-fi) https://cutt.ly/qeKzHlXs Youtube Music (mp4) https://cutt.ly/BeKzHel5 Robert & Clara Schumann PLAYLIST (reference recordings):    • Robert Schumann (1810-1856) Clara W.Schuma...
