Whale Watching in LA | Wildlife Photography on a 70-200mm

I went Whale Watching in LA. And, photographing the whales in a distance was a serious photography challenge. My photography on Instagram:   / brendanvanson   We made it to LA yesterday on the vlog, and I had a Marriott Reward waiting for me today. I got to go whale watching. I've been whale watching quite a bit, actually. But, I tend to be really unlucky. In LA, though, I wasn't supposed to have luck. It's shoulder season so sightings weren't guaranteed. Still, we found fin whales and blue whales. It was incredible. Of course, I wish I had more lens. Photographing whales, or any wildlife, for that matter, on a 70-200mm lens is tricky. It's really just not enough lens. Especially when the wildlife is so far away. For me, the ideal wildlife photography lens is the Canon 100-400mm but I still haven't bit the bullet and bought it. Wildlife photography is one of my favourite things to do. I love getting the 70-200mm out and trying to capture something cool. And, even if I didn't get the greatest photos in the world today, it was a bucket list sort of day seeing the Blue Whales. Tomorrow on the vlog, I'm leaving the US and heading across the sea.
