India has only 21 Param Vir Chakra (PVC) recipients. One is from the Indian Airforce, Flying officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, rest 20 are from the Indian Army. It always fills me joy and pride talking about legends of the Indian Army. Normal people like you and I who through their courage have become immortal. What fills me with even greater joy and pride is when I get a living legend of our Army to talk about another legend. In this episode, we will talk about the unimaginable courage of 2nd Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal. He was just 21 years old and had been commissioned in the Indian Army only 6 months back, when the 1971 India Pakistan war broke out. His unit the 17 Poona Horse was part of the famous “Battle of Basantar” in the Shakargarh sector. Battle of Basantar fought in the Western front of India during the Indo-Pak war of 1971 is considered to be one of the Fiercest Tank Battle ever fought between two countries. Ten enemy tanks were destroyed, of which Khetarpal personally destroyed four. He was badly injured and was ordered to pull back. He refused saying, "No Sir, I will not abandon my tank. My gun is still working and I will get these bastards." Not a single enemy tank could get past 2nd Lt Arun Khetrapal. Needless to say that the Indian Army won this battle. Arun gave his life for us and our country. He died during Battle Of Basantar, Shakargarh Sector, 16 December 1971 For displaying the most conspicuous bravery and for making the supreme sacrifice, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was posthumously awarded the #ParamVirChakra. I am extremely honoured that today I have 2nd Lt Arun Khetarpal's batchmate with us to share his story. He is One of the most loved and famous Military leaders of India. He is a fierce warrior when it comes to protecting our India and otherwise a very humble and gallant officer. I am talking about none other than Maj Gen GD Bakshi SM,VSM, Combat veteran and a scholar with a PHD in Strategic Studies, Author of 40 books.
