He spent his childhood and youth in Turin, where he graduated in Literature with a thesis on Walt Whitman. His shy nature, heartbreak, and successive life crises, both religious and political (initially linked to fascism, he later became a member of the Communist Party), led him to a state of isolation that culminated in suicide.
