Production and sales began a year later. The P38 designation comes from the project name "Project Pegasus" and workshop No. 38A at the Solihull plant, where the vehicle was built. The SUV resembles its predecessor, but offers a radically different level of comfort. The Range Rover P38 is an SUV, but with excellent off-road capabilities. Its 4.7-meter body and 2.7-meter wheelbase placed it in the same class as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but in reality, it played in the league of the Mercedes ML and BMW X5. The British model handled better than the Grand Cherokee and was just as capable off-road. In terms of comfort and hospitality, the Range Rover P38a was on par with Mercedes and BMW. The Range Rover is only available as a 5-door model. It can seat four adults, and the trunk has over 500 liters of space. No other automaker in the 1990s offered such a wealth of features as the top-of-the-line Land Rover. Full power accessories, airbags, and air conditioning were standard on even the most basic versions. Customers could choose the upholstery—velour or leather. For an additional fee, customers could get a Harman Kardon audio system, navigation, monitors in the front headrests, dual-zone climate control, a phone, cruise control, a heated windshield, and power seats. EAS air suspension was standard on all versions. The vehicle was built using the proven SUV design—a frame. However, the body itself was made significantly more rigid. This allowed the Range Rover to better grip the road and prevent the body from swaying on steep passes. To improve safety, the body's structural integrity was redesigned, identifying deformation zones and reinforcing them. Furthermore, the metal was galvanized, guaranteeing high corrosion resistance. The British SUV features two rigid axles, developed from scratch specifically for the P38, although based on components from other models. The axles are suspended by air springs, replacing traditional coil springs. Combined with hydraulic shock absorbers, they allow for suspension adjustment over a range of 125 mm. The vehicle automatically lowers at speeds above 80 km/h. The body can be raised or lowered by 50 mm using buttons on the dashboard. This system, with minor modifications, has also been applied to the rear axle of the second-generation Land Rover Discovery. Furthermore, the EAS system levels the suspension when loaded and distributes the load, reacting quickly in corners and over uneven surfaces. The main advantage of the chassis is its exceptionally high level of comfort. The Range Rover's transmission is not particularly innovative. The vehicle has permanent all-wheel drive. Traction is distributed between the axles via a two-stage Borg Warner gearbox with a center differential and a limited-slip rear differential. The SUV was not equipped with a classic all-wheel locker. Later in production, it received an effective traction control system, similar to the Discovery II and Defender. The engine selection is limited. Only three powertrains were available, including two large, in-house-developed petrol V8s. The smaller of these had a displacement of 4.0 liters and produced 182 hp and 340 Nm of torque. The larger, with a capacity of 4.6 liters, produced 215 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Both engines deliver decent performance but burn a lot of fuel. The diesel engine is a BMW 2.5-liter unit, known as the TDS. It's based on the not-so-successful M51 block, which is quite stable and powerful, but suffers from a number of defects related to the cylinder head and valves. To allow the engine to operate at significant inclines, a large oil pan was specially installed. The turbodiesel produces 137 hp and 276 Nm of torque, which, combined with the car's considerable weight, is barely sufficient for driving. Fuel consumption, however, never drops below 10 l/100 km.
