Basilio Manalo - FSTA Artist Feature

BASILIIO CAJUCOM MANALO- the legendary violin pedagogue of the Philippines, mentor to leaders and prime movers of the country’s music arena. He was an orchestra builder, having founded the Philippine Research for Developing Instrumental Soloists (PREDIS) with Sr. Mary Placid Abejo, OSB, the Young Artist Chamber Orchestra, the Manila Youth Symphony Orchestra and revived the Manila Symphony Orchestra. Trained at the prestigious Juilliard School under the eminent pedagogue Ivan Galamian, Basilio Manalo served as associate concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 1980 performing under Maestro Ling Tung. He also concertized as a soloist throughout the Philippines and abroad before deciding to base himself permanently in Manila to embark on a mission to raise the standard of string performance and pedagogy in the country. His legacy lives on in his students, who continue his mission of teaching excellence. Get to know the man who set a higher standard for both students and teachers, and whose influence can still be felt today. Through the eyes and memories of his daughter Ica Manalo-Sebastian, we will get a close, personal look at a man who, to many of us, was an esteemed teacher and colleague, but yet remained mysterious. As you listen to her speak, we invite you to listen to Basilio Manalo’s rare recordings. FSTA sits with the pillars of the Philippine string community in our Artist Series These generous artists and teachers have graciously agreed to share their knowledge and experience spanning decades and continents to the next generation of rising Filipino musicians.
