On Saturday October 24, 2015, I was given the rare opportunity to ride through the Hoosac Tunnel via Amtrak's Autumn Express. Traveling between North Adams and Florida, MA, this 4.75 mile long journey took just over 19 minutes. Amtrak was very kind to me and allowed me to ride on the back deck of the VIP car to shoot while going through the tunnel! This gives us what is probably the best Hoosac Tunnel footage to date. Please enjoy the footage and the banter I had with the 2 relief engineers! Key elements: 00:33 - Enter the West Portal 02:22 - End of brick works (There are other segments of brick through the tunnel. This is where the main tube ends.) 04:47 - West Signal Light 10:42 - Central Shaft Bore (1 of 2 Large dark "void" on right. There are two of these, one on either side, which bore in and twist up to the central shaft) 10:42 - Beginning of Central Shaft Brick Arch 10:46 - Hoosac Hotel (On right - Marked by old catenary pole sticking out from wall) 10:48 - Central Shaft Bore (2 of 2 - Large dark "void" on left.) 11:09 - Midway Point of Tunnel - Note Two Reflective Discs on Right 16:58 - East Signal Light 19:49 - Exit the East Portal If you spot other things which should be noted, please comment below!
