Is perception just a grand illusion? From a first-person perspective, our perception of the surrounding world appears detailed and continuous. However, we know from empirical research that our cognitive contact with reality is extremely limited. Yet, in our experience, we remain unaware of most of these limitations. This raises a philosophical question: are we under a profound illusion regarding the richness of our experiential knowledge of the world? Together with Andrey Kochenkov, we discuss the grand illusion hypothesis and the experiments that inspired it, as well as the critiques of Alva Noë and other sensorimotor enactivists.
