Burundi, neighbouring countries step up protection for Lake Tanganyika • FRANCE 24 English

The second-largest lake in Africa, Lake Tanganyika is adorned with its sandy beaches that span four nations. But the ravages of overfishing and pollution have taken a toll on its delicate ecosystem. In a bid to rejuvenate its biodiversity, Burundi and its three neighbouring countries have taken the unprecedented decision to impose a three-month fishing ban on the lake every year, from May 15 to August 15. This measure, though detrimental to the livelihoods of resellers and fishermen, is crucial in facilitating the resurgence of the region's beloved fish.
