Disappointment not only for the lack of a verdict, which will have to wait until November 25th, but also for the words used by the defendant's defense during their closing argument. For the two lawyers representing Impagnatiello, Giulia Geradini and Samantha Barbaglia, the former barman is not the "strategist" portrayed by the prosecutors and the plaintiff's lawyer, but rather a "fragile and vulnerable man." "For Giulia's family, present in the courtroom, watching her murder trial was like watching her die a second time. The defense's words resonated offensive and insensitive, characterizing the killer's atrocious act as a 'grave act,' as if it were a trivial mistake, a prank, and not a heinous crime." Chiara Tramontano, the victim's sister, vented with these words in a long message on social media. She attended the closing arguments in court, along with her entire family, anxiously awaiting a verdict that, however, never came. "The defense stated that, if the killer had been a 'true strategist,' he would have 'thrown Giulia's body away,' as if it were garbage, with no respect for the value of a human life. These words offend not only the victim's memory, but also those who remain." Chiara believed that reality should have been faced, but instead the defense requested that the aggravating circumstances be dropped. "With a gruesome reading of messages sent by the killer to his victim after killing her, we were invited to appreciate a glimmer of guilt and a plea for forgiveness," Giulia's sister writes. "A ridiculous scenario, reiterated by his defense for a distorted assessment of actions that conceals the full atrocity of someone pretending to seek a companion he had already killed and burned twice." She then concludes: "When faced with the truth, one always expects a murderer to raise his hands and accept his fate. Instead, we witnessed a theatrical representation of the failure of empathy toward the victim's family and of every human value. The image of this murderer conceals the entire failure of humanity, sociality, family, and respect for the feelings of others. Every word spent on such a murder becomes as miserable and repugnant as the murder itself."
