In the latest episode of the videocast "Polityka o historii" (Politics on History): Who were the lead children? Anna Kowalczyk, a journalist with Polish Radio's Third Program and author of the audio story "Lead Children. The True Story," tells the real story of lead poisoning in Szopienice, a disease that primarily affected steelworkers working in Silesia. The Szopienice non-ferrous metal smelter, established in the first half of the 19th century, operated until 2008, but it gained notoriety primarily in the 1970s. This is the subject of the latest Netflix series "Lead Children." But does reality on screen meet true history? We discuss the truth and fiction in the series. Videocast guest Anna Kowalczyk reached out to witnesses of those events and spoke with historians and medics, allowing those on the front lines to speak out. This included Jolanta Wadowska-Król, a doctor specializing in tenement housing, Professor Bożena Hager-Małecka, and Wiesława Wilczek, a nurse. With the support of residents, these women solved the mystery of the poisoning of the Szopienice children. Some call it a "Silesian Chernobyl." The women revealed the scale of the problem, as research showed that approximately 5,000 children suffered from lead poisoning. Those still alive still feel its effects, even though, thanks to the efforts of two doctors, they spent months in sanatoriums and quickly managed to escape Szopienice. Agnieszka Krzemińska talks with Anna Kowalczyk in "Polityka o historii" ("Politics on History") about whether the problem was solved permanently and whether we have learned any lessons.
