Police Operation in Hanover Park

Over 700 guns in 2 years. That's how many weapons Cape Town's enforcement services have taken off our streets already. I join up with the LEAP officers in Hanover Park, accompanied by Minister Reagen Allen from our Western Cape Government. We have thirteen suburbs across our municipality that have a 24/7 LEAP deployment. LEAP officers are a special deployment of Law Enforcement officers that are funded together by City of Cape Town and by the Western Cape Government. We started with the police station that had the highest rate of violent crime, including murder and attempted murder. Since national government was not giving them enough police officers, we sent these LEAP officers to that police area to assist the SAPS members there. Already we have built this up to cover 13 of these police precincts! So effective has this been, most of these police stations no longer feature in South Africa's worst 30 police stations. While the rest of SA continue to battle a surging murder rate, here our crime stats have stabilized. But that is not good enough. That is why we have set ourselves the goal that by 2030 we must have brought the murder rate down by half. City of Cape Town. Lets do more.
