But it's not just the ghost makeup that's stale; the terror on offer is also outdated and can cause stomach upset if consumed in excess. Once upon a time, there were four literature students from Jakarta who were conducting research in a village. Upon arriving in the village, an alpha male student named Syahdan (Rory Asyari) is smitten with Mahia (Berlliana Lovel), a village girl whose hobby is reciting poetry aloud on the beach. Because Syahdan is a literary figure and his favorite poet is Chairil Anwar, they naturally fall in love at first sight. However, Syahdan and his friends don't know that Mahia is actually a werewolf, a pod ghost who enjoys eating babies. This film actually offers a touch of romance, a rarity in local horror films. Unfortunately, the romantic elements are handled haphazardly, even to the point of cringe. Watching Syahdan first help Mahia, who stumbles on the beach while carrying a fishing net is enough to make you shake your head. Furthermore, Mahia reading poetry aloud on the beach, catching Syahdan's attention, only makes your brow furrow even more. The terror of the pod ghost, with its stale porridge makeup, is also concerning. At the beginning of the film, the audience is shown how terrifying this baby-eating ghost is, appearing to float from the sky like a red kuntilanak. But by the end, this ghost is being chased by residents, like a thief who has just stolen a mosque's donation box, until finally cornered and begging for mercy. For some reason, the third act of the film suddenly turns into a Trans TV sketch show. The film gets even more absurd when Leon Dozan plays a feminine role, but it's overdone and distracting. His acting is almost playful and ends up dominating the other three student characters, who aren't particularly good either. Worse yet, Leon Dozan's character determines the film's climax. While the story has potential, these things tarnish the film. So, if you watch this, consider it a trial during Ramadan.
