Route Precedence -- How does a Router choose a path when multiple paths exist?
There are three attributes that are considered when a Router is determining its preferred path when multiple paths exist. This video describes and illustrates all three by showing them to you in a lab. At the end of this video you'll understand all three attributes, plus you'll know what happens when all three attributes are identical. There are two Bonus Questions that will test how well you understood the concepts: 1. How will the Routing Table change after this Static Route? 2. What path will R1 choose to get to 9.9.9.129? Post your answers in the comments below. I'll provide the official answer in another video. Timestamps for reference: 0:00 - Start 1:56 - Equal Cost Multi Path (ECMP) 4:35 - Metric / Cost 8:10 - Administrative Distance 11:54 - Route Specificity 12:49 - Summary 13:34 - Bonus Questions This video covers the knowledge from these exam objectives from the CCNA exam (200-301) 3 - IP Connectivity 3.2 Determine how a router makes a forwarding decision by default ** 3.2.a Longest match ** 3.2.b Administrative distance ** 3.2.c Routing protocol metric In the video I use a Wildcard Mask of 0.0.0.0 when configuring EIGRP and OSPF. To understand what that is and how that works, check out this video: • Wildcard Masks -- What are they? How do yo...
