Dominion of New Zealand (1907-'47) WW2 Māori Song 'Hitara Waha Huka' (Hitler Foams at the Mouth)

3rd of September 1939: The Dominion of New Zealand declares war on Germany, the same day as the United Kingdom and Australia. In the coming years, over 100,000 New Zealanders (6.5% of the population) would serve overseas with distinction, earning the respect of allies and enemies alike. 11,928 would never return. The 28th 'Māori' Battalion, made up of indigenous Māori people, earned a particularly high degree of renown in North Africa: Erwin Rommel has been quoted as saying 'Give me the Māori Battalion, and I will conquer the world.' This song was written by Māori teacher and shearer Tuini Ngawai and first performed by Ngāti Porou schoolchildren at the Ngarimu VC Hui ('Hui' being a Māori word meaning an assembly or gathering) in 1943. It is sung to the tune of the popular Australian shearers' song, 'Click Go the Shears'. In the version taught to these schoolchildren, the rather vulgar 'Purari paka nei' was replaced with the less strident 'Kaura mokai e', which means something like 'lowlife coward'.
