Forty thousand years ago, in a cave near the southern edge of Europe, the last of an entire kind of human sat by a fire — the last Neanderthal. For a century, we told their story wrong. A single 1908 reconstruction of an old, arthritic man became the stooped "brute" of our textbooks, and we turned the word Neanderthal into an insult. The truth is harder to look away from: they buried their dead, cared for their injured, made art on cave walls, used fire and language, and thrived across Ice Age Eurasia for nearly four hundred thousand years — far longer than our own species has existed. And they did not simply vanish. Around forty-seven thousand years ago, our two kinds met and had children. Today, roughly one to two percent of the DNA of people outside Africa is Neanderthal — and we now know their genes reached African populations too. The last Neanderthal did not disappear.
