What began in 2012 with rapper Psy's song "Gangnam Style" has since become a global phenomenon. In South Korea, thousands of young people dream of a life like that of their K-Pop idols. We traveled to the capital, Seoul, and took a closer look at the industry, including its darker side. How does one break through in the K-Pop business? And what sacrifices do young people have to make to achieve it? RTL reporter Laurien Weinbrenner meets 16-year-old Yaena Kim, who dreams of becoming a K-pop star and trains every day after school until 10 p.m. – for €800 a month. There's hardly any time left for leisure or friends. "The entertainment industry simply wants you to be amazing," says Yaena. Otherwise, you're quickly dropped – she explains how she copes with this pressure in the video. The downsides of success are also discussed in a conversation with members of the K-pop band NEWBEAT. Yeoyeojeong Jeon says he hasn't seen his family for a year. Bandmate Minseok Park says you have to be able to withstand the pressure to wear the crown.
